Freedom from Uncertainty
We do like certainty; we do like to know what’s going to happen. Many of us are quite prepared to give up a lot of our freedom, or at least our liberty, in favour of certainty.
One of the problems, one of the causes, is our belief, or at least that of some, that what ‘happens in our lives happens ‘to’ us and we can do nothing, or very little, about it. The other key cause of uncertainty is lack of clarity about what’s going on.
“What’s going to happen when . . .” or “if . . .” is a constant concern for many people, generally fomented by the media who speculate continuously on ‘what might or might not happen’. It drains the spirit of energy and generates a negative ambience leading to tension about the situation of the moment.
The thing is, it’s really not difficult to deal with this one. There are two things to do. The first is to understand ‘things’ do not just happen to us. Situations and circumstances emanate from us and can be managed and controlled. What ‘happens’ depends on us, individually and collectively, at all levels. This may seem illogical but ‘what happens’ isn’t based on logic.
Second, we have to obtain clarity about what we believe is ‘going on’. Uncertainty about something, and hence resistance to it (resistance to change for example) is created by lack of clarity. But what really is ‘clarity’? Often not what we think it might be.
