My Story

“You can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending”    –    C S Lewis

But where are you now, and how did you get here?

As a transformational coach and therapist I can help you understand your mindset and belief paradigms and then unpack and declutter your thinking.

I can show you how to ignore all the negative voices, fears, and limiting beliefs that are holding you back.

And what is going to be your ‘ending’? – Where are you headed?

I can help you discover who you really want to be and what you really want to do, have, and give, and then guide you on the path towards that vision.

I can help you with your personal or business ambition and vision – but what I’ve found is that it’s your personal vision that is the real force behind whatever your business vision may be.

I am a transformational coach and mentor, therapistspeaker, and writer

  • I help you figure out what’s going on in your head, in your mind, and look at whatever you want to be or do in your personal and business life from the inside as well as from the outside.
  • As well as a qualified Coach I am a clinical hypnotherapist using the fast track RTT technique to discover and remove those unhelpful beliefs you developed in your early life and I use another modality to look even further back than that to clear the blocks and restrictions you’ve inherited.
  • I help you focus on on what you do and what you think, to help you develop an understanding of what you want, why you want it, where you want to go, and how to get there.
  • Transformational Coaching is based on many different techniques and philosophies, some very old and some relatively new.
  • 40 years of study have enabled me to discover the most useful approaches to help you achieve what you want.
  • For nearly 50 years I have been writing professionally, magazine articles, reports, student guides, papers, analyses and studies some poetry and most recently I produce a weekly inspirational e-zine and I’m working on a series of practically oriented books and workbooks to help you achieve what you want to do in life and business.
  • Alongside this I have published many works by other authors, in particular poets, novelists and biographers in Liverpool as well as annual student guides to Liverpool and Manchester back in the 1970s.
  • Unlike most people it seems, I’ve never had a ‘fear’ of speaking in public to large or small groups. I’ve delivered hundreds of lectures, presentations and teaching sessions and acted as MC to large concert audiences.
  • I’ve delivered many informational and inspirational speeches to audiences of all sizes and get great satisfaction from being able to inspire people in this way as well as through the written word.

Over the last 50 years or so I’ve been a concert and event promoter, printer and publisher, systems analyst, barman, programme manager, writer, MBA tutor, network marketer, speaker, business coach, scuba instructor, high school teacher, information consultant, project manager and marketing consultant – not necessarily in that order and sometimes, more often usually, doing more than one thing at the same time!

I’ve been coached by key thought leaders including Joe Vitale, Mary Morrissey, Natalie Ledwell, Peter Thomson, Phil Olley, Andrrea Hess, Jason Jackman, Steve G Jones, Marisa Peer, Bob Proctor, Ed Ludbrook and Steve Neale.

The books I’ve studied are too numerous to mention but some of my key influences include Neale Donald Walsch, Napoleon Hill, Ayn Rand, Wallace Wattles, Stephen Hawking, Dale Carnegie, Charles Handy, Allan Pease, Bo Short, Earl Nightingale and many more.

I’ve enjoyed a comprehensive business career.

Starting in the late 1960’s as a concert and event promoter (whilst at Liverpool University) and then with partner Sue Place, founding Anvil Press (Liverpool) to serve the Student Union market mainly in the North West along with many other customers in the local area.

We created and published an annual Student Guide to Liverpool and Manchester funded by advertising sales which was highly regarded and later sold to another publisher. We also published several books by local poets and authors.

We went on to take over Peter James Printing Ltd and Modula Design serving organisations like Rank and Ladbrokes nationally with design and print.

At the start of the 80’s in the light of massive technological changes we decided to break up and sell the company’s assets which we successfully accomplished.

Following an 8 year break when I was employed in the IT industry, notably ICL in Manchester, as Senior Programme Manager, I started Business Developments Ltd providing at first project management consultancy to medium sized businesses.

In 1994 on the strength of my contacts and record at ICL, I was invited to help with the formation of Railtrack working sequentially on civil engineering organisation, valuation and flotation of the company, the performance regime, and the Year 2000 initiative. There were only a few very short breaks between these assignments!

The demise of Railtrack and replacement by Network Rail led to a policy of not employing consultants so I spent the next few years as a consultant with smaller companies in the sector working on survey and mapping (this was before Google!), a Franchise bid, production of site access guides, and signalling renewal on the London Underground.

Meanwhile I had other business interests including MBA tutoring for Warwick Business School and setting up and operating, as a Master Scuba Diver Trainer, Manchester Scuba School for 10 years, brought to an end by a decline in demand for scuba training in the UK as more opportunities opened up in warmer waters!

In 1999 I entered the world of Network Marketing and this still provides a significant recurring monthly income although I’m not actively engaged on the ‘front line’ any more. As a result of 20+ years experience and my ‘orthodox’ marketing background I’m now one of the most knowledgeable and possibly only impartial experts in the UK on this business model.

I’ve now largely evolved the company back to its roots in the publishing and product creation arena and look forward to many more years and opportunities to help people achieve their goals and in association with my sister company Life Mastery Universal Ltd. providing life coaching and therapy services.

Overview

I’ve spent more than five decades working across science, education, business creation, consultancy, systems thinking, publishing, coaching, and therapy. What unites all of this work is my ability to understand complex systems – whether technical, organisational, or human – and translate that understanding into practical ways forward.

I’ve founded, owned, led, and advised multiple businesses in different sectors, often ahead of mainstream adoption of new technologies or ideas. Over time, my work has evolved from focusing primarily on external systems to working increasingly with internal ones: mindset, belief, identity, and purpose.

Foundations

I began with a strong scientific education, graduating from the University of Liverpool with a BSc in Life Sciences. That training gave me a disciplined, analytical approach to understanding how things work and how they break down.

Early work as a teacher and student leader developed my ability to explain complex ideas clearly, manage groups, and take responsibility within structured environments. These skills have remained central to everything I have done since.

Building and Exiting Businesses

In the 1970s and early 1980s I co‑founded Anvil Press (Liverpool), later Peter James Printing Ltd. I built the business from scratch, producing printed materials, student guides, and published works, and serving both local and national clients.

Anticipating major technological change, I exited the business by selling its assets, an experience that shaped my long‑term thinking about timing, strategy, and adaptability.

Systems, Technology, and Change

In the 1980s I retrained in information technology and moved into systems analysis and programme management. I worked on early digital transformation projects and later managed large portfolios of complex programmes at ICL.

This period deepened my understanding of organisational behaviour, communication failures, and the human challenges underlying technical change.

Consultancy and Infrastructure Work

In the early 1990s I became an independent consultant and founded Business Developments Limited. Much of my work focused on the rail and transport sector, where I supported reorganisation, asset management, safety reviews, performance systems, and major investigations.

A recurring theme in this work was uncovering the gap between official processes and operational reality and helping organisations close that gap.

Education, Mentoring, and Leadership

Alongside consultancy, I spent around 20 years as a distance learning MBA tutor at Warwick Business School, working with senior managers to apply theory to real business challenges.

I have also held numerous leadership roles in professional, community, and educational organisations, strengthening my skills as a mentor, facilitator, and guide.

Scuba Diving Training and Operations

Alongside my main business and consultancy work, from 1979 to 1994 I was also heavily involved in recreational scuba diving instruction. As an Advanced Instructor I served as Diving Officer for the Merseyside branch of the British Sub-Aqua Club and later co-founded Manchester Scuba School.

As a PADI Instructor and later Master Scuba Diver Trainer, I trained recreational divers in the UK and abroad, including organising qualification trips to Malta and liveaboard trips to the Res Sea. This work required operational management skills, discipline, safety awareness, calm decision-making, and clear instruction under pressure, qualities that have carried through into my later work as a consultant, coach, and mentor.

Network Marketing and Recurring Income

From 1999 onwards I became deeply involved in network marketing, building large teams and customer bases. I approached this work with an orthodox marketing mindset, which gave me a rare objective understanding of the model.

This experience shaped my thinking around recurring income, leverage, leadership, and the psychology of motivation.

Coaching, Therapy, and Transformation

From around 2013 I deliberately shifted my focus towards coaching and therapy. I am a qualified transformational coach and clinical hypnotherapist trained in Rapid Transformational Therapy, alongside other modalities designed to clear deeply rooted belief patterns.

My work helps people understand what is driving their thinking, release limiting beliefs, clarify who they want to be, and design practical paths towards that vision.

 Writing, Speaking, and Purpose

I have written professionally for nearly 50 years and continue to create educational and inspirational content. I am also an experienced public speaker, having delivered hundreds of talks, lectures, and workshops.

Today, my work brings together coaching and therapy, business strategy, education, publishing, emerging technology advisory, and speaking. At its core, what I do is help people understand where they are, how they got there, and how to move forward with clarity, purpose, and confidence.
